Julius Caesar, 49-44 BC. Denarius (Silver, 20 mm, 3.47 g, 5 h), with M. Mettius, Rome, January-February 44. CAESAR IMP Wreathed head of Julius Caesar to right; to left, lituus and simpulum. Rev. M•METTIVS Venus standing front, head to left, resting left arm on shield set on globe, holding Victory in her right hand and long scepter in her left; in field to left, G. Babelon (Julia) 32 and (Mettia) 4. Crawford 480/3. CRI 100. Sydenham 1056. Beautifully toned and with a superb portrait of Caesar. Minor old scratch on Caesar's wreath, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Agricola Collection, privately acquired from Münzkabinett Funk on 26 October 1980 (with original dealer's ticket).
